Join us to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the settlement of Jackson Bay!

January 19th 1875, was the very first landing of immigrants at Jackson Bay under a Special Settlement Scheme.

The government had surveyed a township and farming community in the area, promising generous land ownership schemes, on-going employment, unlimited natural resources to harness, regular communication, vital infrastructure and a prosperous future.

  • Plaque Unveiling

    Saturday 18th January

    1:30PM

    Meet at the Arawata Cemetery to unveil a new plaque with confirmed names and information of people buried within. We then progress to Jackson Bay and meet at the DOC kiosk to reveal the information panel offer 300 names from the firmt ship load of settlers in January 18th, 1875, followed by the new plaque unveiling at Jackson Bay foreshore.

  • Celebration Dinner

    Saturday 18th January

    5:30PM

    Meet in the Arawata Bar at the Heartland Hotel, 26 Haast-Jackson Bay Rd, for drinks and speeches from 5:30pm followed by a full buffet dinner at 6:30pm. This is limited to 150 tickets so be quick!

    Period costume is encouraged but not compulsory.

    Drinks are not included in the ticket price but may be purchased the bar.

  • Historic Display

    Friday | Saturday | Sunday

    10:00am-5:00PM

    Kathryn Bennie, the Jackson Bay historian who has done exhaustive and meticulous research over the last 12 to 14 years on these early settlers, will host a display in her shed at the Bay.

    This may be of particular interest to those with ancestors that settled here.
